Welcome to the Geophysics at Rensselaer Home Page! We are a close-knit, highly active program within the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. Our faculty are engaged in a broad spectrum of research and educational activities, from watching faults move in Sumatra to imaging the substructure of Asia to characterizing aquifers in New York. We do spend time working in our offices on our computers and thinking about the theoretical side of our science, but we prefer to be outdoors and therefore nearly all our projects have a large field component. Check out the descriptions of our current research projects. We also offer a wide variety of Geophysics courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels, which compliment the broad spectrum of offerings in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department. Our graduate students are actively involved in several research projects and are a great group of people to work with. Let us know if you would like more information about us! Send us e-mail or call 518-276-6474. If you would like some related perspectives, try the Earth and Environmental Sciences Home Page, the RPI Home Page, or some of the other Links we have listed.

Take A Virtual Field Trip!

We're putting together some of our favorite photos from places we've worked in some kind of rational order so that you can get an idea of what it's like to do field work with us. This part of our site is rapidly evolving, so check back often and see what's been added.

We are members of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), as the image to the left suggests. It's nice to be a part of an organization that can make interesting animated gifs.

We are also members of the University NAVSTAR Consortium (UNAVCO). NAVSTAR is an acronym for Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging, so UNAVCO is a meta-acronym (which suggests how many acronyms one has to deal with in this business). UNAVCO is a great organization, even if their graphics aren't as cool as IRIS's.
