Photos From the Kara Sai Recon and the Road from Kadji Sai

Figure A1. Kara Sai. View looking south along the Kontour road. Typical scenery.

Figure A2. Kara Sai. View looking north, at the intersection of the Kontour road (which goes north and to the right) and the old road to Kara Sai (which I am standing on).

Figure A3. Kara Sai. View looking south, taken from the same spot as figure A2. We are leaving the good road, so Kolya is switching to four wheel drive.

Figure A4. Kara Sai. The crew at the junction. From left: Kolya, Ilya, and Nick.

Figure A5. Kara Sai. Oops, what happened to the road? This is on our way to the final pass, and a combination of late spring snow and warm temperatures make the road an icy stream. Nick is breaking the ice with a crowbar.

Figure A6. Kara Sai. This begins a series of recon photos. Nick is standing at "site 1", located SW of the border guard post.

Figure A7. Kara Sai. The view to the west, slightly downhill from Figure A6.

Figure A8. Kara Sai. "Site 2", located a bit to the northwest of site 1.

Figure A9. Kara Sai. Looking back to the locations of sites 1 and 2 from the valley. Both are located just behind the closer (and lower) outcrop of basement near the center of the figure. View to the southwest.

Figure A10. Kara Sai. Series of panoramic photos of the preferred site, located to the southeast of the guard station. This view is looking approximately east over the ridge.

Figure A11. Kara Sai. View to the south of A10.

Figure A12. Kara Sai. View to the south of A11.

Figure A13. Kara Sai. View to the southwest of A12.

Figure A14. Kara Sai. View to the west of A13.

Figure A15. Kara Sai. View to the west of A14.

Figure A16. Kara Sai. View to the north from the same spot as the previous pictures, looking into the valley in which Kara Sai is located.

Figure A17. Kara Sai. View looking back to the west along the ridge (Note that our truck is in the same position.

Figure A18. Kara Sai. View looking south from the valley into the hills where we did our recon.

Figure A19. Kara Sai. On our way back from Kara Sai, we ran into a blizzard at the pass. Road, already bad, now worse.

Figure A20. Kara Sai. The road ahead.

Figure A21. Kara Sai. The crew, thinking about how to drive on this road.

Figure A22. Road to Kadji Sai. A brilliant place to stop for a late lunch. Nice waterfall and noone but a few sheep around.

Figure A23. Road to Kadji Sai. Yours truly getting lunch together.

Figure A24. Road to Kadji Sai. The waterfall up the valley.

Figure A25. Road to Kadji Sai. Waterfall again. Look near the center and you will see Steve and Nick on the ice in the middle of the stream.

Figure B1. Road to Kadji Sai. Sunset over Issyk Kul. The camera just couldn't manage all the colors. There was a brilliant sun (left) and heavy rain (right) at the same time. Better in person, I'm afraid!

Figure B2. Kadji Sai. Amat Bek and family at the station in Kadji Sai, just before we left for Narin.
