Figure 3. Photo and interpretive diagram of one of Colvin's stations where the monument cap has been pried off but the stem remains. Note the sculpted depression, about 2" round (somewhat oval in this instance), where the monument cap was recessed into the rock. Note also the nearby hole, which is a typical feature of Colvin's stations. Note that we punched a mark near the center of the stem to use as a centering point for future surveys. This photo is of one of Colvin's "new-style" monuments, not one of his earlier bolts which are of smaller diameter.
