Parkfield Area Seismic Observatory

PASO is a part of two major initiatives in Earth Science: USArray and the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD), which themselves are components of an overarching inititative called EarthScope.

The principal objective of SAFOD, also known as the "San Andreas Scientific Drilling Project" is to investigate the earthquake nucleation process using a combination of surface and subsurface observations. The cornerstone of the project is a drillhole that will pass through a seismogenic part of the San Andreas fault at depths of 3-4 km. In addition to bringing up cores from the fault zone, monitoring devices will be placed in the hole near the fault to measure seismicity, temperature, fluid pressure, and deformation.

USArray is a continental scale array of broad-band and short-period seismometers to provide a coherent 3-D image of the lithosphere and deeper Earth. The focus of the effort will be within the national boundaries of the United States (hence the moniker). PASO is a prototype of a "flexible" USArray deployment.

EarthScope is a large-scale Earth Science intitiative focussed on North America in general and the US in particular. In addition to SAFOD and USArray, the main components of EarthScope include the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) applications.
